A new report published in the journal Nature Climate Change this week, authored by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, says that the record-breaking heat wave that swept across Australia in early 2019 was caused by a powerful low-pressure area over the region. As the map below shows, it wasn’t just the temperature that climbed in Australia during the heat wave, but the barometric pressure as well: “The Australian heat wave [in February 2019] was record-breaking in that it was not only the hottest February on record (second hottest day was February 1), but also broke the record for both the highest daytime mean atmospheric pressure and the lowest low-pressure area intensity [i.e., the part of the low-pressure area that makes up the bulk of the heat wave],” they write. The heat wave brought extreme temperatures to every region of Australia, and set some records in the process. On February 1, 2019, the average maximum temperature in the country hit a new record of 46.4 degrees Celsius, beating out the previous record of 45.7 degrees Celsius from Feb. 1, 2015. Warm temperatures like that are exceedingly rare. The scientists are careful to point out that they weren’t able to definitively say that climate change was at the heart of the heat wave — it’s possible
